On September 4, 2013, Samsung held a special event in Germany to launch the new Note 3, the new Gear Smartwatch and update their tablet. A new feature called "Air Command" was introduced which fulfills Samsung's patent application that we only published last week.
Samsung Patent Image from Recent Application with USPTO
Below you will find a patent figure from Samsung's recent patent application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office in late August. I was as surprised as anyone to see Samsung unveil this new feature earlier today when revealing the newly designed Note 3 smartphone.
Samsung also surprised me with a new S-Pen which we only covered last week in this report. If not mistaken, I think I saw the Samsung demonstrator at one point tap on a button at the top of the Note 3 screen like the one illustrated in Samsung's patent filing as noted below.
This would mark two patent applications fulfilled within a week. While it's as rare as it gets, it counts as two important patent ideas first presented on our site that no other Android site saw coming.
Point of Interest: Pranav Mistry Introduces Gear
In 2009, Patently Apple posted a special report titled "Apple Mages Working on Augmented Reality Magic." It was in this report that we covered a wearable computer known as "The SixthSense," developed by Pranav Mistry, a then PhD student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT's Media Lab. At that time we stated that "Science fiction is sometimes the inspiration behind motivating entrepreneurs to invent great things that the public are already comfortable with. For example, the race is on for a miniature video iPhone that resembles that of a Dick Tracy watch."
So who introduced Samsung's new computer watch called Gear at today's event? Yes, surprisingly the very same Pranav Mistry behind The SixthSense. We'll definitely be looking to see if Mistry can deliver some real innovative ideas for Samsung going forward.
