Samsung has publicly stated that they hope to have the world's first smartphone with a foldable display on the market by 2015 – and the pace of their patent production clearly demonstrates that their teams are going full tilt on this project. In today's patent report you'll learn about Samsung's work on extending popular versions of smartphone apps to work in a superior manner on dual display smartphones. Samsung's patent filing presented more than a hundred patent figures broken into distinct categories such as calendars, video conferencing, photo cataloging, gaming and much more. Samsung Invents Dual Display Smartphone and New User Interfaces & Modes of Operation
One of Samsung's latest patent filings describes methods that will support smartphones designed to operate with multiple displays. The new multi-display smartphones will require new interfaces to accommodate the new form factors. It will no less alter the very way that smartphone applications function.
One or more exemplary embodiments also provide a portable device which detects a touch gesture of a user from a plurality of connected touch screen displays and displays information in response to the detection, and a control method thereof.
One or more exemplary embodiments also provide a portable device which displays a clipboard in a designated position in response to folding of dual displays connected by a hinge or bending of a flexible display, and a control method thereof.
One or more exemplary embodiments also provide a portable device which sets a bookmark of an e-book displayed in a display, or moves pages and then displays the e-book in response to folding of dual displays connected by a hinge or bending of a flexible display, and a control method thereof.
One or more exemplary embodiments also provide a portable device which provides a video for a video conference to a first touch screen display and displays a document file or a white board shared by participants of the video conference in a second touch screen display, and a control method thereof.
One or more exemplary embodiments also provide a portable device which provides a game interface for a first user to a first touch screen display and displays game information for another user in a second touch screen display, and a control method thereof.
One or more exemplary embodiments also provide a portable device which provides a user interface for a call application through a dual touch screen display, and a control method thereof.
Samsung notes that when it is detected that the first and second panels 2 and 4 included in the portable device are folded-out during the call in the public call mode, the portable device turns off the second touch screen and switches the public call mode to the private call mode as illustrated in FIG. 23J.

While Samsung filed this patent application back in Q1 2012, the documentation notes that there was a priority filing dating back a year. Considering that this is a patent application, the timing of such a product to market is unknown at this time.
