Today the US Patent and Trademark Office published a series of newly granted design patents for Samsung ranging from MRI scanners to stove top controls and beyond. The more interesting designs that are presented in our report cover a new Smart Band that's different than Gear Fit, and three new curved smartphone designs that are different than Samsung's latest Galaxy Note Edge.
Unlike "patent applications," design patents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office don't reveal pertinent information about a particular design. We can look at the design and appreciate it for what it projects, but we'll never discover which materials may be used to construct the design. We'll never know what unique internal components may be hidden within the device or learn about any unique features that we could look forward to. All we get is the simple visual of what could be coming down the pipeline.
Samsung's newly granted "Smart Band" design patent appears to be more of a bangle than Gear Fit is today that uses an adjustable wrist band. This could be designed to appeal to active women. Below are design patent figures showing different angles of the new band that may become a part of the Gear Fit family down the road.
In three separate granted design patents, Samsung shows us that their design team is working with various possible concepts for future smartphones now that the Galaxy Note Edge has come to market.
The first design has a slight curve on the left side of the smartphone that may allow for a better hand grip. The second design provides a wider left curve while the third provides a dual curve design.
In the latter design we're able to see a slight top curve and a much larger bottom curve that could act more like a home phone than a mobile phone. Something too curvy won't comfortably fit a pant pocket. However, Samsung clearly categorizes this design as a "mobile phone."
What we don't know is whether the last phone design will allow the user to bend the two areas as comfort options to a phone that out of the box may be straight and curve free.Time will tell if any of these newly granted design patents come to life or die on the vine.
