Today the US Patent & Trademark Office published a patent application from Google that reveals their possible intention of adding an integrated projector into a future version of Google Glass.
Google's patent FIG. 3 noted below illustrates an embodiment of a Google Glass system that incorporates a projector that Google says can present to others the same information that is seen by the Google Glass wearer via its internal display.
The projector can also present information to others that is different from the information seen by the wearer of Google Glass. In another mode of operation, the projector (#125 below) can function alone, without the need of the internal display being on.
Technically speaking Google's patent abstract states the following:
Embodiments are described of a light guide including a proximal end, a distal end, a front surface and a back surface, an ambient input region on the front surface near the distal end, and an output region on the back surface near the distal end. A beamsplitter having a plurality of faces has one face optically coupled to the proximal end of the light guide, and a display is optically coupled to another face of the beamsplitter. A projector assembly is optically coupled to a face of the beamsplitter opposite the beamsplitter face that is optically coupled to the light guide. A reflecting element having optical power is positioned at the distal end of the light guide, and a distal optical element is positioned in the light guide near the distal end.
Google filed this patent application back Q2 2013. Considering that this is a patent application, the timing of such a product to market is unknown at this time.
