In June we posted a report titled "Samsung Reveals New Circular Interface Smartwatch with Rotating Ring Controller, 3 Gesture Levels, new Charger & More." Today we present you with information from a new Samsung invention that was first published by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office back in late Q4. The invention relates to a method for a new Gear watch to display a user's schedule based on a current time in a pie chart style.
Samsung's patent FIGS. 6A and 6B illustrate displays of schedule data on a new round Gear interface according to their new invention.
More specifically, In Samsung's patent FIG. 6A we're able to see a newly designed gear watch displaying a total display time from a reference time 610a, for example, one or more schedule items for six hours in a form of sector areas 612, 614 and 616.
The sector areas 612, 614 and 616 correspond to the scheduled items that are sequentially arranged on the display screen of the wrist watch #610 in a clockwise direction to form a pie chart. Each of these sectors corresponds to one scheduled item.
Samsung's patent FIG. 6B illustrates an embodiment of the present invention in which the sector area #612 has an arc of a length corresponding to a time section from 9:30 am which is a start time to 12:30 pm which is an end time of a corresponding schedule time.
In this case, the sector area #612 may include a progress bar 612a (for example, an arc type) indicating a progress state of the corresponding schedule item, and the progress bar visually displays the current time from among entire time sections of the corresponding schedule item.
Samsung's patent FIG. 12 noted below illustrates an operation of changing a view mode of schedule data in a wrist watch according to this invention.
When a user input touches or clicks on the center area of the watch's display screen, the wrist watch changes the view mode to a daily view mode. The center area may be defined as an area including a middle point of the display screen of the wrist watch. In the daily view mode, sector areas 1212, 1214, 1216, 1218 and 1220 correspond to schedule items for twelve hours periods.
Samsung's patent FIG. 13 noted below illustrates an operation of changing a total display time of schedule data in a wrist watch.
When the user presses on the center of the watch with a long-press or touch, the wrist watch will display a menu window #1320 for changing the total display time on the display screen.
For example, the menu window 1320 may be displayed on a dial face in a popup window form. The menu window includes a plurality of menu items 1322, 1324, 1326 and 1328 indicating changeable total display times, for example, three hours, four hours, and twelve hours.
Samsung further notes that the wrist watch is synchronized with portable electronic device such as a smartphone by using, for example, Bluetooth.
Samsung filed their patent application back in Q1 2014. Considering that this is a patent application, the timing of such a product to market is unknown at this time.
Sidenote: According to a new Samsung trademark filing that was published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on January 21, Samsung is trying to trademark the word "Nudge." The new trademark could apply to a smartwatch which means it could apply to the smartwatch application above.
The trademark was filed under International Class 009. Samsung's filing specifically noted that Nudge could apply to the following: "computer software used for capturing gesture, facial, and voice recognition for the touchless control of other computer applications, computers, phones, smartwatches, and other mobile and multimedia devices; downloadable computer application software to read, automate, manage and control other third party computer applications."
