Today the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published two interesting Samsung granted patents. The first relates to a flexible display for TV's or tablets that could be folded. Interestingly Samsung states that they could flex both OLED and LCD displays to my surprise. The second granted patent noted in our report relates to an electronic chalkboard.
Samsung Granted Patent: Flexible Display
Samsung has been granted a patent today for their invention relating to a display device, and more particularly, to a display device having a flexible display panel.
In the configuration shown in Samsung's patent FIG. 2 above, the flexible display panel #10 is an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panel having a pixel array including a plurality of OLEDs. The display device #100 may be embodied as a large-scale television but the described technology is not limited to such.
According to Samsung, "Another embodiment of the display panel employs a liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. According to some embodiments, the flexible display panel is greater than 8 inches in size." This would be in the range of a Galaxy Tablet product.
In the configuration of patent FIG. 4, the printed circuit board #20 is formed at the outer side of the flexible display panel. However, in other embodiments, the printed circuit board is formed in an inner portion of the flexible display panel and the printed circuit board can be bent along with the flexible display panel.
Samsung's granted patent was originally filed in Q2 2014 and published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Samsung has a large body of patents relating to flexible and foldable displays and you can review them in our Samsung Display Archives here.
Samsung Granted Patent: Electronic Chalkboard
In December 2013 Patently Mobile (formerly Patent Bolt) posted a report titled "Samsung Seeks Patent for Next-Gen e-Chalkboard System." Today Samsung was granted a patent for this invention.
According to Samsung's newly granted patent, the electronic chalkboard system includes the following: a plurality of display panels; a pointing device which touches the plurality of panels; an image processor which processes an image to be displayed on one of the plurality of panels that is drawn by the pointing device touching the one of the plurality of panels; a controller which selects one of the plurality of panels according to a preset condition based on a first panel of the plurality of panels if the first panel is touched by the pointing device, and controls the image processor to display on the selected panel a menu related to the image displayed on the first panel; and wherein, if a second panel of the plurality of panels is touched by the pointing device while the menu is displayed on the selected panel, the controller newly selects one of the plurality of panels according to the preset condition based on the second panel and transfers the displayed menu to the newly-selected panel.
Samsung's granted patent was originally filed in the U.S. in Q2 2013 and published today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
