The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office recently published a patent application from Samsung that revealed their work on a new 3D app for future Galaxy tablets and Note smartphones that work with an electronic pen. The invention also relates generally to touch screen devices with proximity (hovering) detection capability.
Overview Chart of the System
Samsung's patent FIG. 7 noted below shows an example screen for setting a 3D effect mode in a tablet or smartphone. The electronic device can enter a 3D effect mode in operation once the "on" (#705) virtual button is pressed.
For instance, mode selections may be provided with a water drop effect icon #711, a paint effect icon #713 and a sand effect icon #715. The user may select one of these 3D effect modes through any suitable means (e.g., touching the icon, hovering the digital pen over the icon and pressing the pen button to input a pen command selection signal, or through a voice command). After the 3D effect mode is selected, a subsequent display type within the selected effect mode is recognizable based on hovering distance and/or a change in hovering distance, in combination with another pen input command. When "OFF" #707 is selected in the 3D effect mode menu 703, the electronic device may recognize that no 3D effect mode is active.
Samsung's patent FIG. 10B is a diagram of a screen for displaying a 3D effect based on the hovering and the key input in the electronic device.
Samsung filed their U.S. patent application back in January 2015. Considering that this is a patent application, the timing of such a product to market is unknown at this time.
