Samsung Display cranks out new designs like a chocolate factory cranks out bars. Over the course of time, some interesting designs emerge and today we're going to show you a host of new ideas from Samsung and Samsung Display that we've been collecting for weeks so that we could issue a single report with a lot of concepts for your review. But beware; one design may make you laugh so hard that your belly could be sore for a week. You've been warned.
Unlike "patent applications," design patents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office don't reveal pertinent information about a particular design. We can look at the design and appreciate it for what it projects, but we'll never discover which materials may be used to construct the design. We'll never know what unique internal components may be hidden within the device or learn about any unique features that we could look forward to. All we get is the simple visual of what could be coming down the pipeline.
Samsung Design Patent #1
Samsung Design Patent #2
Samsung Wins Patent for Fold-Out Phone with Keyboard
Samsung is in a race with Lenovo to create a 'Fold-Out' smartphone design as covered in a January 2017 report. In a Samsung granted patent issued earlier this month by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office we see a spin on the Fold-Out smartphone design by filling the center space that's hollow with a slide-out keyboard. Below you can see two designs. One with a rounded display going from front to back and second design that's square with a keyboard track built into the design.
Samsung Wins Patent for 'Stretchable Display'
In April Patently Mobile posted a report titled "Samsung Reinvents the Phablet with a Retractable Display, 3D Touch & Dual Projectors to Deliver Content." Earlier this month Samsung was granted a patent for a Stretchable Display which is a motorized version of the patent that we covered in April.
According to Samsung, "Stretchable displays can display images even when the displays are stretched by external forces. Stretchable displays include an elastic substrate and electrical components formed thereon. For instance, the elastic substrate is formed of an elastic material such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS).
Samsung specifically notes in their granted patent that "stretchable displays include a stretchable conductive material that can be a conductive polymer, a carbon nanotube, graphene, etc."
Samsung's next-gen Phablet with a stretchable display could add a new dimension that will be difficult for competitors to copy quickly.
Design Patent #3: The Absurd
Every once in a while we get to see an engineer's work just before they enter rehab or the funny farm. Their work, vision and views of the world are a just a little bent, warped and well, demented at times. What can you say when you see a design like the one below? It's so crazy that I have to give you a link to the design patent # D786,865 just so that I'm not accused of trying to insult or mock Samsung's engineers without cause. Yes, you can laugh at it too.
