On Friday Tesla delivered their latest electric car called the Model 3 at a special event and allowed some to take a spin in them as Engadget did and reported on. The USA Today video noted in our report is short and to the point showing various models and the new interior with its large infotainment system tablet attached to the dash. While it's impressive, it's nowhere near where a new Samsung patent envisions it going. In fact, it's nothing shy of reinventing the dashboard as we know it today. By killing off ugly buttons and dials, Samsung envisions a clean digital dashboard like how Apple's iPhone killed off buttons and physical keyboards with their iPhone. It's a game changer.
Samsung's Patent for Luxury Vehicle Control System
Samsung's invention includes a driver recognition device #160 as noted above may sense motion or bio information of the driver sitting in the driver's seat, and convert the measured or sensed information into an electrical signal. The driver recognition device may include a grip sensor, a proximity sensor, a fingerprint recognition sensor, an iris recognition sensor, an e-nose sensor, an electromyography (EMG) sensor, an electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor, and electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor, and/or an infrared (IR) sensor. The driver recognition device may further include a control circuit for controlling at least one sensor configured in the driver recognition device.
The fingerprint recognition sensor may be mounted on the dashboard that is adjacent to the driver's seat and may be included in a user operation button for starting the automobile. For example, the fingerprint recognition sensor may scan user's fingerprint information while the driver presses the user operation button to start the automobile. The iris recognition sensor (or face recognition sensor) may be mounted on a ceiling in front of the driver's seat and may scan user's iris or face information in response to user's pressing of the user operation button to start the automobile.
Next-Gen Dashboard Concepts, full Width Displays
Patent FIG. 3 illustrates the interior of an automobile to which an automotive control system according to embodiments of the present disclosure is applied; FIGs 5A and 5B shows the user interacting with an additional display built into the steering wheel. When the driver chooses to play their music app, the display could show the driver option to control volume or change track. Users can adjust the control panel elements of any app by using pinch in and pinch out controls or move them left or right etc.
Samsung's patent FIG. 7 presented below illustrates the exterior of an automobile to which an automotive control system according to embodiments of the present disclosure is applied. Each corner of the vehicle includes a camera; In patent FIG. 8 we see a flow chart with a method for operating an automotive control system.
Samsung's patent FIG. 15 noted below illustrates a display screen during normal traveling. The patent figures below it just show that the user will have the freedom to customize the dashboards digital elements so that every driver can have a unique dashboard look.
For future luxury car digital dashboards, Samsung's U.S. patent application was filed in January 2017. The day of the ugly nobs and dials may be over in the coming years … Hurrah!

Next-Gen Digital Dashboard for the Econo Vehicle
A second Samsung patent on the digital dashbaord published earlier this month illustrates one for the less expensive economy vehicle market. The patent figures illustrate a tiny dashboard popping up from the dashboard once the vehicle is turned on. The dashboard has limited option to present the driver. The options can be moved around the display in an order the driver prefers.
Samsung's patent 20170193634 was filed in July 2016 and published by the U.S. Patent Office on July 06, 2017. To review the second patent's details for the economy vehicle dashboard, click here.
