Samsung was granted a design patent earlier this summer by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that is noteworthy. The design shows us that Samsung is continuing to invent possible new tablet designs that could take advantage of foldable displays that are only a year or two away. The tablet is designed to fold in three and in such a manner that it creates its own cover that looks like a leather portfolio used to carry pen and pad as noted in our cover graphic. Beyond that unique feature, the tablet could also act as a notebook in a secondary configuration with supporting kickstand and more. The design could be very tempting for students and professional alike.
Unlike "patent applications," design patents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office don't reveal pertinent information about a particular design. We can look at the design and appreciate it for what it projects, but we'll never discover which materials may be used to construct the design. We'll never know what unique internal components may be hidden within the device or learn about any unique features that we could look forward to. All we get are simple visuals via patent figures that you see below.
Tablet Doubles as a Unique Notebook with Virtual Keyboard
While we have no official details regarding the patent figures below, it's pretty obvious that the tablet design was created with having a dual functionality of tablet and virtual notebook. One of the folds could act as a virtual keyboard with the backside of the table offering a kick stand to keep the display portion upright while typing. With end users trying to reduce the number of devices they have to carry around, this unique design provides a hybrid that many may find to be a hit.
