The U.S. Patent Office earlier this month posted a patent application from Samsung that revealed a new kind of protective case that that encapsulates a possible future Galaxy smartphone. Yet in a way, it's the phone that's just as unique. The phone will provide illuminated icons on all 4 sides in addition to its glass back. The protective case offers a unique 'touch' feature. Users will be able to touch the icons on all four sides of the phone through the protective case and activate them without ever actually touching the phone itself.
The case could be made of tempered glass, high impact resistant materials such as polymer materials such as polycarbonate, polymethylmethacrylate, polyethylene terephthalate or transparent rubber materials.
In Samsung's patent FIG. 18B above illustrates the backside of the case with the phone's backside having a rear light emitting device (referred to as a BLP which may stand for back light panel) controlled to realize an image such as the "S" illustrated above. It's designed to display various characters, symbols, images and the like.
The corners are marked EP for "Connection Part" and LP for light emitting device. Although the patent never explains what's being connected, it would stand to reason that the 'touch' aspect of this case is turned on by the these noted corner connections.
Samsung's many images noted above illustrate that the cover design could take on one of many configurations and opening methods before coming to market.
Samsung's patent application which was published by the U.S. Patent Office earlier this month was originally filed in the U.S. in Q3 2018.
