Yesterday Patently Apple posted a report titled "Patents from Google and ZTE show that they're working on Folding Smartphones too." Another, LG, who passed on a foldable smartphone for MWC 2019, said that they were working on a foldable smartphone but that it wasn't ready. A new LG design patent now shows us that indeed they're working on a foldable smartphone for some time down the road if the folding technology improves.
Whether LG plans to wait for Corning's foldable glass or go with the trend earlier with specialized plastic displays is unknown at this time.
Unlike "patent applications," design patents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office never reveal pertinent information about a particular design. We can look at the design and appreciate it for what it projects, but we'll never be given needed details that could explain new design features. All we get are simple patent figure visuals of what could be coming down the pipeline like those presented below.
LG's design patent that was revealed today by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office was originally filed for in July 2017.
