For the month of July, the US Patent and Trademark Office published a total of eight new trademarks for Samsung. One trademark is for "Gear S" which may signal the moniker of Samsung's next smartwatch or wearable device. Another relates to Quantum Dot Televisions which may support their upcoming new line of televisions due later this year.

Some of the higher profile trademark filings made by Google and Samsung for June thus far have been rather interesting ones to be sure. Google filed two trademarks pertaining to their upcoming smartphone with a slick 3D camera called "Project Tango" while Samsung filed for a few related to their future "Gear Store", another for a future product called "Samsung Gear VR" and more.

In March we covered Google's Android Wear Developer Preview and noted that LG was manufacturing the "G" Watch or Google Watch that is due out this summer. LG has a teaser webpage promoting the watch. It's a smartwatch that will always be on, offer Google Now voice commands and be water resistant. Now LG is seeking a trademark for the "W Watch" according to a recently filed application with the US Patent and Trademark Office. If there's any logic to the G Watch being for Google, then perhaps the "W Watch" will be for Windows. While only time will tell if that pans out, what we do know is that the W Watch is likely to offer more features as revealed in their trademark filing.

On February 21, 2014, the US Patent & Trademark Office published several new trademark filings from Samsung prior to the Mobile World Congress Trade Show in Barcelona where Samsung is to reveal a new round of products. Samsung has a history of filing for last minute trademarks just before a big event in an effort to keep new features a secret until the very last moment while hyping possible products in the process. The new trademark filings that were made public today cover new Galaxy branding themes and a wireless beacon feature called Flybell which is likely to counter Apple's iBeacon. According to a December 2013 CNET report, more than half of Samsung's 62,000 engineers are now working on software. Samsung's co-CEO Boo-keun Yoon stated that "Software is something that we're working on continuously. These days, hardware is important, but that is not enough." That's because Samsung's future will rest upon how well its products work together, which is all about the software. With the World Mobile Congress trade show kicking off on Monday, Samsung's timing of three trademark applications in the US tells us about one of the software services that they're likely to introduce: Milkmusic.com.
