Patently Mobile covered a very important Samsung patent application this past June in a report titled "Samsung Reveals New Circular Interface Smartwatch with Rotating Ring Controller, 3 Gesture Levels, new Charger & More." That was a technical patent filing that covered a lot of ground about future smartwatch development. It was a meaty patent filing that you could sink your teeth into. Yesterday, the US Patent and Trademark Office published four new smartwatch related design patents. Two of the designs support a fully round smartwatch interface. Another design supports a different flavor of round that appears more modern and integrated into the band. And lastly, the fourth design patent presents a rounded-rectangular interface. Samsung is clearly open to altering their Gear interface design should Google's Android Wear watch design prove to be more popular. And I think that Samsung also wanted to make sure that they had at least one more design with "rounded corners" just in case their design is ever challenged by those in Cupertino.
Unlike "patent applications," design patents published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office don't reveal pertinent information about a particular design. We can look at the design and appreciate it for what it projects, but we'll never discover which materials may be used to construct the design. We'll never know what unique internal components may be hidden within the device or learn about any unique features that we could look forward to. All we get is the simple visual of what could be coming down the pipeline.
What we do know is that Samsung was granted four Designs that we present to you in-part below. The banner on each set of designs indicates which design they are. Two of the designs are broken down into sets of "1A and 1B" patent figures.
